The
Lowell Bleachery, located a short distance from most of the mills, had a good
supply of fresh well water to use for the bleaching and dying of the fabrics
produced in other parts of town. The first workers had to live nearby, giving
rise to the Back Central neighborhood of multi-family housing. After the
Bleachery closed, The Prince Spaghetti Company used some of the buildings for
manufacturing and The Prince Grotto, a fancy restaurant with large aquariums
between the entrance and the dining room, which children believed held the fish
that would be cooked for dinner. The buildings are gone, but the fading word
“Spaghettiville” can still be seen on the railroad bridge over Gorham Street
leading into the neighborhood.
